A meteorite larger than Table Mountain slammed into the ground at breakneck speed near what is now Vredefort in the Free State. The resulting thousand-megaton blast of energy was nature's equivalent of a nuclear catastrophe. Oppenheimer Park Golf Club, Welkom, Free State / The challenging and well-manicured course, with its profusion of magnificent tall trees lining the fairways, is on the outskirts of the gold-mining centre of Welkom and lies next to a large dam inhabited by thousands of flamingos. Many scientists believe the rich gold and diamond deposits found in a concentrated belt throughout these two provinces, many also be amibuted to the huge explosion. A visit to the Bloemfontein Zoo is the perfect opportunity to learn about some of the wildlife we have in South Africa. You can stroll around the grounds which cover an area of approximately 15 hectares and see a variety of animals which include over 65 mammal species and a large variety of birds.
