This is the site of Shaka´s capital after the Ndwandwe campaign, with construction starting around 1820. The nearby cowards´ bush is where King Shaka allegedly used to have warriors executed if they had shown cowardice in battle. The first major contact between Shaka and the western traders from Port Natal occurred here. It is a Zulu site of major importance. |

A 20 minute trail starts from the Museum Village entrance gate through a section of fern forest and over a stream to the head of the falls from where a lower trail can be followed but it is steep, dangerous and risky. More than a century ago, Cetshwayo - the Zulu warrior who led his tribe against white troops set on subjugating them - was buried in the heart on the Nkandla forest. The forest´s receding edge is now visible from his grave. |

The Nkandla Forest is one of the most outstanding examples of surviving mist belt forest in South Africa. Apart from being an area of great, often pristine, natural beauty, the Nkandla Forest represents a rare relict type of high wet rain forest, of which very few examples survive. |

On 30 March 1883, shortly after Cetshwayo was restored to Zululand, the Usuthu faction under Cetshwayo´s brother Ndabuko and others, were defeated in this valley by the Mandlakazi faction under Chief Zibebu. Although outnumbered, the Mandlakazi slaughtered thousands of Usuthu. |
